BOATERS EDUCATION and SAFETY COURSES

Every state will require the operator of boat to have a boater's license or certificate of a boaters safety course.

The requirements vary by state, type of water, size of the boat or the engine. Personal Watercraft (PWC) are also strictly licensed. See our state list to find the laws before you operate or boat.

BOATING SAFETY COURSES

There are many sources to learn about Boating. In addition to the US COAST GUARD and COAST GUARD AUXILIARY, your state or local county may also provide boat safety and education classes. Many of these are offered for free or for a small fee. Your state may have also partnered with Boat-Ed (Boat-ed.com) or other recognized providers. Most will indicate they are approved by your state and perhaps the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and/or recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Boating License Requirements

Refer to your state boating laws for more information on Boat License Requirements.

Boat Registration
Most types of boats must be registered. Refer to your state boating laws

A typical note: It is illegal for the owner or person in control of a motorboat to allow someone who does not meet the age or boating education requirements to operate the vessel.

Operating your boat in another state from where it is registered.

Many states permit you to operate a boat registered in your state in the state you are visiting for a limited period of time. Rules vary by state. Refer to the state boating laws of the state you will be visiting.
